Authentic Tradition

Authenticity is when something is genuine, real, reliable and trustworthy. When one lives authentically it means to be in line with one’s self or representative of one’s true nature or beliefs. So one could easily suppose that when you are living authentically in line with your own true nature you are then more genuine, real, reliable and trustworthy.

When we see authenticity in others we are drawn towards it. It is a trait of great leaders, inspirational acts of service, and people that are happy and at peace in their own existence.

In fact there is an amazing quote by Mahatma Gandhi “ Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” That just sounds like authentic living to me. When you are living an authentic and happy life you will be living a stress free life, because when you truly embrace your authentic self you will be wrapped in self love, and love changes everything. It takes those pieces of yourself that you used to hide from or deny and frees them to be an expression of self. Something that can be worked with.

Authentic living in the physical expression of your true nature. It is when you live in such a way that you are in harmony with the universe at large because your truest self is a bit of distilled universal essence. It is the part of your being that transcends your physical body, one could call it your spirit or ego. It can be the little voice inside yourself guiding you, or a gut reaction to something. It requires a self-acceptance, which is not just the best parts of yourself but also the darker bits too.

I have been on my own authentic living path for years. I was living in a place where authenticity was sacrificed for the “common good” on the regular, and I as not about that. How can we live a life of service if we are not in service to ourselves first? I was regularly put down for having authentic experiences or authentic needs that differed from that of the decision making body and governing board. Even in my leaving of that place after 9 years I was sad and ask for support from my friends, and was told I was not allowed to ask for help as it reflect badly upon the organization. Let me tell you friends that was not a safe space for me. Because others were not willing or unable themselves to live in authenticity my authenticity was seen as a threat rather than an opportunity to grow together.

I write a blog called The Hot Mess Home Homestead to put my authentic voice out into the world because for years there was not space for it in my daily life. And for those years people would repeatedly email me thanking me for putting a voice to their own authentic experience that they were struggling to identify or put words to, and commending me for my bravery to speak my truth. When we are authentic in our own experience we give others permission to also be authentic. That is such a powerful gift and act of healing for the world at large.
