Earth Tradition
Raise your hand if you could use some grounding and stability in your life. I know I sure could.
Well let me rephrase that, at this point in my journey I can catch myself and reground myself, but I would love to be able to drop into that nurturing stabilizing earth energy with a bit more ease. Less of it being a conscious act and more of it being a natural state of being.
To bring one’s being into alignment with the energy of the earth is to experience, compassion, consistence, patience, groundedness, and an openness to giving. The key to tapping into this grounded energy is to do so from a place of stability not rigidity. Remembering the the gesture of mother earth is very nurturing, it is the womb of all life on earth. As such then, if you are out of alignment in your earth energy you will become inflexible, sluggish, and stubborn.
Now looking at this elemental being through the lens of the work we have been doing we can see how this element dovetails nicely into the material we have already covered in our elemental block. If the air removes what is no longer serving you to create room for new parts of yourselves to flourish, and the water shows us the parts of yourself that need more of your attention to flourish into those new found spaces, then the earth give us the solid foundation to take up this work.
I am sure most of you know that it matters where you put the foundation of a house. If you put it on the sand it will crumble. If half of it is hanging off a mountain it will fall. The same is true of you. You need the solid foundation necessary to take up personal work, and to live your life in a confident and authentic way. A solid foundation dictates how you respond to the world. Imagine what it would be like to have your base response to life be compassionate, consistent, patient, and grounded. I happen to think if we were all functioning from this place the world would be a much better place.
I would like to offer you a practice to begin to cultivate the connection with the earth element. Do this as many times as you like and begin to take note of the small shifts that begin to come up for you. Bhu Mudra and Mantra
1) Find a comfortable seated position, lift tall through the crown of the head, melt the shoulders down the back body, and let the hands come to rest comfortably on the thighs.
2) Begin to take deep mindful breaths both in and out of the nose. Elongating the exhale until it is twice as long as the inhale. Do this for 2-3 minutes.
3) Root your ‘peace’ fingers (pointer and middle fingers) into the ground with your arms straight out to the sides as you sit on the floor coming into the bhu mudra.
4) Repeat to yourself at least three times “My Roots run deep into the core of the Living Earth.”
5) Continue with the mindful breathing and the mudra until you feel safe, secure, and grounded, feeling your connection to the earth element deepen and solidify. When you are done continue on your day knowing you are a being in alignment with the divine wisdom of mother earth.
